Hello.

The wife works in a food retail store-Nisa to be prescise.

She is claiming a tax rebate for washing her work uniform and shoes for work for the past 4 years.

She works in the bakery section and takes home the tea towels to wash which dry the bakery utensils. She does not get anything monetary from the employer for this.

For those who know their tax is their anything in tax rebate that she could get for that service?

Thanks.

    Why on earth not?
Surely she, or the rest of us (through tax refunds) should not be paying for this!

Are the tea towels used in preparation of food for the customers or just in the staff area?

I would have thought they should be professionally washed if they are they are being used for professional catering.

They are simply washed in our home washing machine.

The local environmental food rating don't seem to have a problem with that. Having said that I don't know if they have asked upon inspection.

I'll ask the MRS when she comes in.

The employer doesn't have to pay.

However, if you wear marked prescribed work clothing such as a t shirt you can claim tax back for washing it at home if you are not given an allowance from employer.

    HMRC form p87

I only found out about it myself today.

The various tea towels are used for washing utensils for food baked and sold to customers and for staff use as well.

This is a store with about 12 employees.
  • Nice idea, but am thinking that this is a no-goer to be honest!

If anything this should be an expenses claim against her employer?
The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...

Yes, I didn't think it would go anywhere and she does get a bit, but not monetary. And not on the payslip.

    That reads rude!
