Concerning Letter from Sigma Red

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes...
I received a letter from Sigma Red (a debt collection agency - I found out after a quick internet search). The letter says that they are trying to contact me, and have been given my address as a possible address. I have recently moved house so it seems likely that they wrote to me at my old address and the letter was returned. They have given me a number to call and a reference number.
I am concerned by this because to my knowledge I have no debts, and I have never dealt with Sigma Red before. If this is genuine and I ignore it, I may get into a worse situation. If I call and it turns out to be a hoax, I'm opening myself up for further scamming.
What should I do?

Tbh I'd just ignore them until they write again with more details.

Hi Hannah
Sigma have probably ony recently acquired the "debt" from another company, so it's not necessarily unusual that you've not heard from them before. You don't refer to any older correspondence so presumably this is the first time you've received anything along these lines?
It's quite possibly a "fishing expedition" on their part, especially if you have a common name that might be that of the actual debtor.
No value whatsoever in calling them, and as for writing I'd be inclined to sit tight until they send you more specific details.
Regards
Dennis

Thanks all. My first thought was that it was a 'fishing expedition'. I actually have a very unusual surname - I believe I'm the only Hannah in the country with my surname - so it's definitely me they're after! I just don't know why. I pay everything with credit card or via direct debit, and i manage those online. Very confused
I won't do anything unless they write back and take it from there.0 -
Hannah - they are looking for someone to chase in relation to some debt that they have acquired and there will be something about you that matches but it may be VERY tenuous and may not be your name - it could just be your date of birth and part of your address for instance. They call this dubious activity 'tracing'.
If you have not checked your credit file recently it may be worth doing so - either do a free trial, and cancel, or just do a £2 statutory report.0 -
seal it and return to sender0
