ipad serial numbers recorded with purchase?

I purchased an iPad today from johnlewis for £459 but after speaking with a friend she also has one, same model, colour etc and sealed in box. Question is does anyone know if the serial number would have been recorded when purchased from JL i.e. can I open and use that one now and return the sealed one I receive from my friend in a couple of weeks. I understand strictly speaking not above board but harmless enough if it can be done?
