referring to OP's post, there is no definite reference on the amount of time/days volunteered however the charity shop manager only would consider references after couple of months
It would be fair to assume OP has worked enough volunteering hours/days to have such conversations with themanager and OP would have atleatst demonstrated some key attributes in a few days or weeks otherwise the manager is truly incompetent0
