My landlord bought us a (very expensive!) memory foam mattress two years ago but I've noticed that, even with a mattress protector between it and our fitted sheet, the top surface of the mattress cover is getting very bobbly like a well-washed jumper and the cotton/polyester mattress protector is sticking to it like Velcro!

Sounds a bit Princess and the Pea but I can feel the bobbling through the fitted sheet so I've had to buy a quilted mattress protector to put on the top.

Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know if you can buy replacement mattress covers for these mattresses? Ours has a zip on the back so presumably it's removable?

I'm concerned that when we leave we'll get money taken from our deposit, the mattress looks really scruffy like it's really old because of the bobbling!

Sorry I don't think the cover is meant to be removed. The zip is for use in the manufacturing process. (If you did manage to manouvre the mattress out of it's cover, you'd have a terrible job trying to get it back in!)
Have you thought of turning the protector inside out so that you have smooth surface in contact with smooth? Another protector on top of that (the proper way) might work....

I did wonder about getting it back in!

I've found what looks like a replacement cover on ebay so I may just buy it then put that over the top of the current cover when I leave.

Can you not "shave" the mattress cover? I have one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELECTRIC-LINT-REMOVER-BOBBLE-FLUFF-PILLING-SHAVER-CLOTHES-RESTORER-DEFUZZER-NEW-/131306579096?pt=UK_Clothing_ShoeCare_Shoe_Care_LE&hash=item1e927b6498 which although a little time consuming, works really well. I've also shaved pilling/bobbles with a disposable razor. Again, quite time consuming, but effective. The key is to get the area you're shaving flat. I'm guessing neither method would be as time consuming as trying to get a new mattress cover on :)

I have one of those somewhere I think but I've never used it. Might dig it out :)

Unless it's actually got the word "Tempur" written on it somewhere - I doubt if it's a really expensive mattress. A few years ago, cheap ones came along and were sold round here from backs of vans etc. and I'm guessing yours might be one of those because of the bobbling.....I'd stick with the mattress cover and not worry about it.

Yeah, I managed to get the cover off yesterday and, well, the foam does not look like tempur, it's egg yolk yellow! It's also discoloured underneath from the wooden slats on the base of the bed. I've found that I can sort of peel off the bobbling with no damage to he fabric underneath so it's not quite as bad as I thought.

Thanks for all of your suggestions though.

I took the cover off mine as the memory foam curled up inside the cover... like when your sock gets all twisted on your foot.. just peel off the bobbles, leave it off and put it back on when you move.. it will hide and stains too ;) .. I used a quilted mattress protector on mine too.

I washed it as my bf spilled coffee on it a few weeks ago Grrr! Now I have a mattress protector on it too. I washed it with vanish twice and the coffee mark is tiny now.
