Scorpion, I really think you need to get some careful, individual advice.

Thanks mgdavid, but not of the above.

I don't mind paying contributions, but only what I need to pay for the full state pension.

Thanks jackyann, where do you recommend I go? As in solicitor, accountant, financial advisor, et al?

So firstly you need to see what your true record of NI contributions is. Go to the HMRC site here to get a statement. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/online-statement.htm

Since you will attain SPA after 6/4/2016 (the start date for the "New State Pension") you will require 35 years contributions (paid or credited) to get the full State Pension.

I don't quite understand how you can be incapable of work through ill-health since 1996 yet you are not getting NI credits? Are you saying you don't qualify for or claim any benefits - IB / ESA / DLA / PIP?
I have a hunch we're not getting the full facts and therefore it will be very difficult to help you.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I would begin with CAB, but they are not present in all areas. There may be a local advice centre, such as community law or welfare advice. Whatever your illness is may have a charity who has advisors.
