Need help - Caught out by Clydesdale?

Hi folks, any help is greatly appreciated.

I have an agreed overdraft with Clydesdale bank of £500 with a secondary current account.

It turns out that on the tenth of this month i was at -£494 having not checked for a while.

on the 10th i spent £9 using my debit card, the 11th £16 and on the 12th i spent £8, i received a letter on the 14th advising me that i had went £4 overdrawn (issued on the 10th) and sent £140 to reduce the overdraft balance slightly.

I was sure that before if i had no funds that the debit card transaction would not be authorised however i have now received my bank statement showing £175 of charges for going £30 over my limit.

I this right? I never received any more letters and i realise that i have made a mistake though did not see how you can get seven daily and monthly charges from them for this.

cheers in advance, G

£175 Worth of charges for been £30 overdrawn ??

Absolutely scandalous, fire off letter of complaint, demand a breakdown of these charges, will these charges cause you hardship ?
If so, tell them that, ask for them to be cancelled, or refunded, don't ask, don't get !!!!

It might be interesting to note that a bloke has just won a case against a bank for similar charges and hardship incurred. If they wont play ball, might be worth pointing this out to them.

I do agree the charges are scandalous.
This will sound unkind but..... You have not been caught out by Clydesdale, you have caught yourself out by not checking often enough if not every day your bank status. Hopefully you will get these charges reduced. We all have a responsibility to ourselves to look after our own business. We don't live in a nanny state.

Many thanks for the replies, it is appreciated and yes gfplux i agree totally with where you are coming from.

I was however sure that before if i did not have enough money in my account it would not be authorised when i went to make payment however i have been told this is due to retailers not taking off the amount sometimes up until weeks later which can make me overdrawn.

I have since been told that i was charged once £25 for going over my agreed amount of £500 and once again for going over my £25 buffer of an additional £25 (The £175 is for the year apparently. )

I'm still not sure why if i have a buffer of £25.00 that i am charged at £4 overdrawn and the again at £25 but at least i'm not down £175 for just this month

    Many thanks again all, G

What do the terms and conditions of your account say?

By not monitoring your account properly you've ended up paying for a personal banking service.
