'Offer'prices

My local convenience store currently has boxed chocolates (new in, special 'winter Edn' on 'offer' reduced from £5 odd to £2.49. Bargain I thought and bought some to stash for Xmas gifts. I was nosing on the internet to see what other stores might sell them at as I haven't seen them elsewhere. I found a wholesales site, same chocs but slightly diff coloured box (prob an image from last year) with the SRP being £2.49

Now I know I should ask myself 'am I happy at the price I paid regardless of whether it was a so called promo or not' and I guess overall I am. But I do feel that I was misled in the fact the chocs caught my attention as having 'offer' price status.

Is the store wrong to promote these at an offer if the selling price is actually the SRP?

  • SRP is suggested retail price so there is nothing to stop a shop marking these chocolates at £5 a box for a short while then reducing then in a sale to £2.49.

This practice goes on in just about every supermarket, furniture store, electrical and electronic appliance shops etc where they increase the selling price in a few stores for a time then reduce it for a sale or special offer.

The clue is in the 'S' - Suggested retail price.

  • When I was younger, I worked in a wholesale Cash & Carry. We used to sell to the small shops like Spar, Londis, Bestway etc.

We used to have product come in which some was Flash packed with an offer price, some unpriced. Both were sold at the same price, but had different barcodes to them, to differentiate them. Some retailers like the Flash price, some didn't. It was up to the shop keeper, if they wanted to offer the special price, there was no obligation to do so.
