What makes you believe the employer would be up for explaining/ justifying themselves to employees who are not valued?
They might not - my point being I would ask the specific question. If I thought the decision was unfair I would leave. Then again if I didnt have a decent relationship with my line manager to be able to have the tough conversation I would also leave0 -

Is the pension/benefits package the same?
This is key. My firm has people on newer contracts who are paid more than others on older contracts, but the people on older contracts have much more generous terms for paid sick leave, for instance. There is an element of swings and roundabouts
I know of other firms where new employees have higher wages than longer standing ones but have less paid holiday, or slightly longer hours. Unless you see the new hire's contract, you don't know what, other than the pay, is different.
If your husband is not happy then it is open to him to apply elsewhere. He should however bear in mind also having been there 4 years, he has employment rights which would make it more difficult (and more expensive) to dismiss him than a new employee, and has more security than he would have were he to move elsewhere. Obviously it is a judgement call for him as to whether the benefit of higher wages is worth the risk of giving up those rights for 2 years by moving jobs. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0
