Tories say they'll build lots of houses and sell them at a discount to FTB

more generally this looks like mostly BS to me.
though i did chuckle at dave saying that these houses:
"...can't be bought by foreigners, they can't be bought by buy-to-let landlords, they can't be flipped round in a quick sale. They can only be bought by hard working people under the age of 40"
it's the "hard working" line that cracked me up. there's some 20-something Etonian junior spin doctor somewhere out there who's convinced that this is the type of womb-trembling rhetoric that appeals to the plebs.
i personally suspect that:
(a) the 20% discounts will be very dubious, prices only being as much as 20% lower than inflated estimates that are up to around 19% higher than say the midpoint of a panel of independent valuers' best guesses; and
(b) if by some miracle these pwoperdees are genuinely available BMV then eligible buyers will somehow be used as a smokescreen by [sniffing a quick buck] parents, spouses, whatever who are anything but FTBs, in almost all cases not young, and quite possibly in a few cases [shock horror] not particularly hard working. i won't suggest that any will be foreigners, that'd just be too loathsome.FACT.0 -
wow, things must be worse than I thought if we need scheme upon scheme... How about stop lending silly multiples and see prices come down so more can afford 'normally' ....0
-
I do think its wrong to offer bribes before an election though......0

When I was looking, new houses carried a 10-20% premium, so it's a fairly meaningless gesture in terms of affordability.0

there doesn't seem to be any subsidy to develop drown field sites except the government will withdraw the BAN on building houses on commercial zoned land and withdraw the absurd 'affordable ' housing requirement.
so just a small change in the planning rules : no guarantee the price will drop.
Large brownfield sites will have to be made financially viable to attract developers. Expensive business to clear up sites and make them safe.0 -
It's disappointing to see this lame attempt to sort the housing market out... I hope another party comes up with a bigger pledge with more detail....
I truly am sick to death of all the BS, career policticians, big business influencing policy, corruption, book of dirt held by whips meaning our disgusting MP's are held ransom when voting, government propping up charities and institutions whom claim to be independent, lack of power in our House of Commons due to so much being signed over to EU... and as for the book of dirt.... remember the judge 'Slosh' they wanted to put in charge of the investigation into child abuse within government ... that investigation is being buried deep when it should be headline news with abuse victims appointed to investigate not officials with vested interests... and as for the BS beheadings to convince us all to go to war... now the UK and many Middle East countries have joined in they won't bother rolling out another studio produced video showing the killing of the latest UK 'aid' worker paraded on the news.Peace.0 -

in general nonsense although there are some issues with old industrial sites
if they weren't viable then they would never be developed
99.99% of all building in London is on brown fill sites without any government subsidy; in fact with extra costs / levies and affordable housing' requirements thrown in
the problem with building in this country is government restrictions on building and mortgage constraints0 -
One effect could be thousands of first time buyers slam the breaks on buying now and instead wait for this 'free 20%' to come their way ...Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.0
