If it would half your fuel bill (£80) then you would only need to find any extra £30 a month. Your banger cost you more than that with its tax and mot costs! Say a £10 a month saving for tax means you would only need £20 a month.

Why don't you just try getting finance from the garage. How do you know you won't get it if you don't try? What have you got to lose? Surely it's got to be worth a try before throwing 4k down the drain on a hire contract

I applied for a credit card last week, I didn't think I would get it but I did and with a limit I wanted. I also got finance from a main dealer when the only credit history I had was my broadband account.

you are totally right about i should try it at the dealership first,,, just the embarressment if it doesnt go through,,, which i know, i should swallow my pride,,, but i tried to get a mobile phone on contract recently and even got turned down for that so its unlikely im gonna get a car finance deal.

I will dig out the deal for the car hire contract, and let you know about which company it was okay :)

and yes you are right about the money, and if i had a decent car my milage would actually increase meaning i would proberbly take home a couple of hundred at least a month paying for the car altogether and the petrol .. like i said before thats whats so frustrating,,,i can afford the car just the credit thats the issue...
think i need to go eat more choclate whilst i ponder on this

My parents bought their car in Motorpoint earlier this year - is there one near you? (theirs was bought 200 miles away whilst on holiday so had to go back 2 weeks later to get it). They had a loan offers too which weren't too bad, and they're both pensioners, but used their savings to buy it.

Hi, I bought a car a couple of years ago from Welcome finance. Similar credit history to you by the sound of it. I pay £124 per month which suits me, I've ended up with a nice reliable car that I am more than happpy with. When this finance deal runs out I shall probably go back and get another. Just make sure if you do choose this, or any similar that you read every bit of paperwork you sign and are happy with everything. People at the showroom were very nice all they did go on a bit and there was a good choice of cars.
I know it's not the recommended route but it's working for us.

If you have an essential car user job, is there anyway you could ask your company to buy or lease a vehicle and take the monthly payments from your salary? There may be tax benefits to them in doing so.
My mum did this when she worked for a local Authority.

I know it maybe a long shot but could your family not get the finance for you and you pay them by standing order or direct debit each month??

I bought my last car from my local garage. It W reg copst me 1k and now 15 month on just been through 2nd mot and needed news tyres. Yay.
Hisa car range from £800 upto 3k ands they are all decent run arounds. At the inute he has the same as my car in again but 3 door and itsa a beauty i just don't have £1500. Could you save like mad for the next couple of months?? I am sure there would be a local garage near you like this, if not have a drive up here lol

I do almost 20k a year milage and i need more than a good run around, hence the need for something new, and fuel economical...
does anyone have anymore experience or knowledge about the personal hire that you do over 3 years and then hand the car back etc.

No personal experience, but I do know that a lot of them have annual mileage limits of around 10-12k. You would need to factor in any excess mileage.:o

thanks for everyones replies.... its actually made me realise that id covered most options myself just needed a bit of reassurance i think...

i cant or rather wouldnt ask my family to help out any more than they have done, they have done so much over the past year every time there has been a crisis and i just cant ask them anymore, I am up to my eyeballs in owing back favours.

Car allowance unfortunately is casual so no chance of the company helping out and like i said they are such a fab company and i love my job so much sometimes you just have to appreciate wht you have and not try and take the pee

i spoke to the dealership and the car hire company about the milage that i do and all quotes have been based on a max or 20k a year so thats all covered.

i think in all honesty i am going to go for the car hire contract thing if i can get it, i know its essentially chucking 4k down the drain but if i buy the car im going to end up with a car that i still have to make a balloon payment on at the end of the 3 years and its going to have huge milage on it, and with the personal hire contract thingy i can simply hand the car back and i do think I have got myself a good deal with the £110 plus VAT.

I will let everyone know how it goes once i have scraped together the deposit.

    thanks once again.

You do have to be careful with car hire, check the details out very carefully. A girl a work with, i overheard her talking and she has been billed 1.2k for minor chips by stone damage fortunately she is a legal secretary so all is being dealt with free of charge!!!!
