Can I use a RTN ticket before an OUT ticket?

Searched but couldn't find an answer to this one. I regularly travel from Stevenage to London, and usually change at Finsbury Park to get on the Underground.
I travel during peak times and have a 16-25 railcard.
I've noticed that a Stevenage to Finsbury Park Anytime Day Return in £13.40 BUT a Finsbury Park to Stevenage return is £12.
Question is: Could buy the Finsbury Park - Stevenage ticket and use the return part of the ticket for my outward journey, and the out part of the ticket for my return journey?
Has anyone else done something similar? Will this present a problem? Obviously £1.40 isn't much but its such a rip off already.
Thanks

The OUT portion expires when the RTN is used.
The Finsbury Park to Stevenage return is actually £11.55, but the minimum fare on the railcard is £12 before 10am.
There are many situations like this, which always seem very unfair. The only thing you can do is campaign to your MP or complain to the fares manager at your new train operating company (Govia Thameslink Railway, trading as Great Northern) who took over from First Capital Connect last week.0 -

"17. Using a return ticket
A return ticket (including a two-part return ticket) is only valid for the outward journey shown on that ticket if the ticket is completely unused. You may not use the outward part of a return ticket after you have used the return part."0
