I used my debit card last night in Asda and they never charged me 1p.

You should go to customer services and ask why this is happening.

This is not an issue that I have ever come across.

Is this shopping in store or Click & Collect?

If the latter is 1p actually being taken or merely reserved? It is common when placing an order to have 1p reserved in order to check the validity of the card. This should be removed immediately the actual order is paid but often isn't and remains for a week or so.

They don't do this, it's probably an authorisation which will never debit.

Its a test amount and won't be charged. This method is more normal at their self payment petrol pumps.

I wouldn't bother, they will not know and the best you will get is a made up answer from them.

This has been happening for years and many people have complained about it. From locking 1p to £1 and even the entire amount.

The supermarkets say they don't do it, it's the card provider and they can't do anything about it. The card providers say it's not them it's the supermarkets and they can't do anything about it.

Personally I think it is the card providers, they have your money and they have full control over it. I can't believe they would allow a third party to access your bank account and "ring fence" money so you, and your bank, cannot do anything with it.

I know 1p is not much, but we've had people in here saying they spent around £80 online with asda. Asda "ring fenced" the full amount at the time of the order then took a different £80 from the account, leaving £80 "ring fenced" for a week.

If asda could access your account and "ring fence", and take £80, why wouldn't they just take the "ring fenced" £80?
