Sorry not know correct place to post this.
Do you think it ok for the village cat to be allowed to sleep in the local chemist on a chair. Cat can wander anywhere and there is no door to the dispensary where bare drugs can be measured out I assume for immuno compromised cancer sufferers and pregnant ladies etc? Thank you for advice

I don't know the answer, but if I was that bothered I'd have my scripts dispensed elsewhere.

I think from a legal point of view they are on sticky ground as there will be food stored in the dispensary such as gluten free bread etc which is available on prescription.

I would think the rules for a food shop must apply.

My cat eats his dinner on the kitchen floor, just below where i prepare my culinary delights! What would Captain Mainwaring or the Verger say?

  • Have you been in the dispensary and seen that the surfaces where they package the drugs are accessed by the cat?

Just being in the room with a cat is not a risk for pregnant or immuno-compromised people. If they are allowing a cat to jump onto the surfaces where they prepare drugs, that would be poor hygiene.

Nope. Not at all. Every pharmacy (except hospital) I have ever seen has been accessible - no doors or other permanent barriers. (Any restricted drugs, such as methadone, will be locked in a secure cabinet/safe.

Very few drugs are dispensed "bare", i.e. not pre-packaged. I can only think of a few antibiotics and possibly painkillers, which come in large dispensary packs, nearly everything in a community pharmacy is now blister packed.

Anyone with serious immune problems probably won't be found anywhere near a shop, and a pharmacy is the last place you want to be if you're trying to avoid cold viruses, stomach bugs etc etc. Pregnant women have nothing to fear from cats unless they are changing litter trays or digging up the garden soil where cats may have been. Stroking the village cat is perfectly safe!

My friend used to live opposite a village store where the cat used to sit amongst the fruit and veg! After a close encounter with a cat-fur smothered potato, she decided to do her shopping in the local Asda!

  • There is no legislation in the UK that prevents any animal from being inside a shop and this includes establishments that store, sell or prepare food. Most shops don't allow any animals except service animals but this is their choice.
All that the law states is that the premises should be kept clean and hygienic and free from pests (not defined). If an inspection was carried out and the cat was walking around the counters where medicines are dealt with something would probably be said, but if it was just sleeping on a chair, there wouldn't be anything to report.
