Do you find yourself staying longer to keep up or to impress the boss? Or are you an on-the-dot clocker outer?

I work a bit longer than 9-5 becasue I can take flexi leave. As a largely unarguable right if my family needs me.
There's always the hope of Special Leave under some circumstances, but that's being gradually eroded, so I like to keep a day or two in hand.0

When my OH became a director a few years ago, one of his problems was that staff just wouldn't leave. Everyone tried to out-do everyone else, showing their commitment to the job etc etc. It made him feel he should be there too!! I suggested that he should make everyone leave by 5 on a Friday. Physically eject them if necessary. They loved him for it - it meant they could be home at a sensible time without having to worry that other people would be staying late and gaining favour. Once they realised they would gain much more favour by doing their job and then going home, everyone was much happier. It also meant he could get home at a reasonable time too.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

What is this? I go home on time EVERY day.
Are people seriously gullible enough to work over for no pay?0

At my last job, the supervisor was always telling me off for clocking out 'early'.
I always clocked out the SECOND my official 10 hour shift was finished (simply couldn't WAIT to get out of there), but because some days I'd clock in 5 mins early, I'd leave 5 mins early, too. (still doing my 10 hours)
But he didn't like me doing that.
So I then began to just wait outside the warehouse after I got off the bus until my shift official began rather than starting a few minutes early.
He saw me a few times, and was like ''you're here, why don't you go in the warehouse and start wrapping pallets??'' I was like ''Because you still won't let me leave until 6pm which will mean me working for free for 15 minutes everday!''
It's only 'ok' when it's in their favour.
Such a liberty. I already want to put a bullet in my head every weekday morning as it is, nevermind working overtime for free!!0

So, you didn't stick to your contract and wondered why you got told not to leave early? At my last job, the supervisor was always telling me off for clocking out 'early'.

If they allowed it for you they could end up causing themselves trouble with other staff wanting to change their hours for spurious reasons.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0

Today is Go Home on Time Day - apparently as a country we work some of the longest full time hours.
 Apparently to who?
Average working hours in South Koreah - 2,193
Average working hours in China - 2,068
Average working hours in UK - 1,647
Even the greeks are up at 2,017

Its kind of a bit daft to think that we are going to be working longer hours than those countries where we outsource to and hire people for 6 days a week at under $1 an hour.
As per fig 5 on http://www.eurofound.europa.eu/eiro/studies/tn1106010s/tn1106010s.htm we are only 3rd in Europe let alone when you look purely at the actual time worked when we are working but that doesnt factor in the amount of holidays etc0

I've never worked a job where I've only worked my contracted hours. Not because I'm trying to keep up with my colleagues, or because I'm trying to impress the boss. It's more that I know that I'm employed to do my job, and often that means putting the hours in to get the most out of the role. I question the commitment of anyone who watches the clock on a regular basis.
On the flip side I don't expect my boss to complain if I finish early or come in late due to a dentist's appointment, getting my car fixed, or whatever. I put enough hours in, so I'm entitled to a bit of flexibility when necessary.0

I work reasonable (and sometimes some might consider unreasonable) unpaid overtime. In return I get treated with respect, can take a late lunch or even some extra time due to dependant requirements, sports day etc.
Respect and trust is earned and goes both ways.0
