Council Tax appeal – Scotland - HELP

Hey Everyone.

I have lived in my property for the last 3 years and it has now come to my attention that all my neighbours (With the same property) are paying a lower Council tax band than my block. I live in a 2 bed room 4 in a Block cottage Flat and my street is a Mix of these and 3 Bedroom Simi-detached houses.

I have sent a letter appealing the council banding along with the SAA Print outs showing the banding of all property’s on my street.

I have had a letter sent back yesterday from the council pretty much saying that I should have done this within 6 months of moving in to my property.

Can anyone tell me what I can do next as I called my local Valuation Joint Board who advised they do not recognise the letter advising that the right to appeal has no time limits on the Gov.co.uk website

Although you cannot make a formal appeal as you are outside the 6 month time limit, you can ask the Assessor to review your CT band as your neighbours' are in a lower band.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

How do we explain that people that have lived the same property for years are getting thousands of £'s refund.
  • I have contactd my Counciler for his view on it. I'll updated if i hear back

Councillors (certainly those I have had dealings with, south of the border) tend to know very little about CT.

Your neighbours aren't getting "thousands of £'s refund" (unless their bands have been reduced). They are just paying less per year. Just tell the Assessor the facts, your home is Band X, other identical ones are in a lower band. Only downside could be that your band is correct and the others are wrong.
