I too learnt the hard way and had infestation early onit is totally avoidable though. I now disinfect the coop every week, dust the birds once a month and probably about every 2 months take the coop apart and jet wash it. The hot weather brings on infestations. We had a few mites in the house whilst we sorted the infestation out.........brought in on clothes no doubt? but it only was a few and lasted a few days at most.
I only ask about the chickens as if they are infested, re-homing them could mean infesting other birds. Id also be careful about using diatomous Earth indoors. One of my children has asthma and diatom really sets it off.
Absolutely. I wouldn't dream of passing on the problem to someone unaware. I even told him to dust the birds n coop with diatom but didn't give him mine as I'm desperate to treat the garden.
I really did have very high housekeeping with the girls. I even bought a very expensive plastic coop with a removeable roof for easy cleaning which has had to be thrown.
The enclosure was made with security fencing which is metal for the same reason.
We avoided wood entirely.
Nothing helped.
The whole thing has been a nightmare.
I had to rehome them as I just haven't got the hours spare to battle anymore as to cleAn the hens, coop and then bath and wash my hair (which is VERY thick and waist length ) EVERY day was taking up time that I could have been spending with mum and the kids.
It really is appalling.
The kids 12 ft trampoline which had new safety covers a few months ago has been scrapped too as I can't take any risks.
I've thrown so much away late last night (all through the front door. Got to try and dispose of it later) has also cost me a fortune
Thee was a beautiful massive pic of my youngest that was behind the settee in a vintage frame that was pulled apart for upcycling as a future project that I've thrown amongst other stuff. My beautiful deep pile room size rug is now thrown outside just in case too.
I have to cancel a kids get together at mine that was arranged on Friday as it wouldn't be very loving to have folk over if there is even the remotest chance of them being exposed to anything.
The guy that rehomed them didn't seem like he was gonna be a god owner though.
He was SO rough when handling them. I asked him to leave it to me as he would make them eggbound with being so rough.
They have been through enough already as were ex batts this February :,(:A Every moment is a gift. That's why we call it the present.!:A

Thanks for the new thread Poppy, might actually get on yours more than mine
Preparing myself for the latest battle with DSes school over bullying yet again, they'll be sick of seeing me this year again as this is the third time I've been to see someone in the 3 weeks since school started back!
I've written notes so I know what I need to say and don't get confused/mixed up. I'll need them as my brain's on a go slow this morning but what's new there :rotfl:SPC #329 £471/£500 banked
