I would love to be on £9 ph would make a world of difference to me and my family, but I'm on £6.40 ph and I'm just getting by on that wage.

There are always nightshift vacancies in supermarkets and the pay is over £9 ph, go for it!:)

  • A job should always pay more than benefits and the government shouldn't subsidise companies by topping up their pay with working tax credits and the like.

I really don't think it would make a difference. Any products will have a price increase to cover the extra wage bill so the likelihood is you'll be able to afford no more than you currently do.

Unemployment would increase drastically as well as many companies would simply shift their operations abroad where labour costs are so much cheaper. We've already seen this with many businesses hiring the services of companies in China or India, imagine how much worse it would be if the wage bill went up by nearly a 3rd.

The best way to make your money go further is to develop yourself to earn a higher salary, or just good financial planning. Ideally both.

Let's cut the minimum wage rate to £5 then

If increasing it is automatically bad and makes things worse it must follow that decreasing it is good and will make things better for everyone

If someone does something to enable themselves to earn more money doesn't that mean someone else will end up having less money?

I'm trying to get a new job but not having much luck, but something will come up soon.
I have been looking at doing something when I'm not at work like OU or some night classes.
My OH is the one who deals with the money side on things and she's well on top of it trying to save what we can and setting a spending limit on shopping and other stuff

But if he says 1 in 5 are low paid then he must have some figure that constitutes low pay

    Really?......
  • Also are they low paid going on hourly rate or total pay? Many may be considered low paid when in fact they have chosen to work part time. It is extremely vague.
