Kilt Help

Options
Hello

Looking for some advise about Kilts.

My other half has his own kilt in his family tartan that he will be wearing for our wedding, however it is not a standard tartan so it would be extremely expensive to source it for other members of the wedding party.

He is at the moment having one best man, and potentially an usher or something similar.

There will also be my dad and his dad at the top table.

Should we be looking to choose one kilt and have everyone bar my OH in it? Or should we let people wear their own if they have their own? This would mean they wouldnt all match of course.

Also, who traditionally would all wear the same kilt? Would the father of the bride wear his own tartan or the same as the best man? And what about the father of the groom?

Thank you in advance for any advise/opinions :)

  • I think usually all the men wear the same tartan however we were the same that OH's was very expensive so we chose a very similar cheaper one for the rest of the men and OH wore his own.

I think it's totally your choice. All the men in my family have kilts in the family tartan, as do most of my Scottish relatives in their tartans. If it's a kilted wedding I think guests will wear their own kilts if they have them.

DH, BIL & FIL hired kilts and went for the one tartan (Bannockburn - his family tartan doesn't come as standard either)

I think it would be nicer if your OH wore his own kilt - unless he's in the Tartan Army probably doesn't get much chance to wear it.

If the blokes are proud enough to wear the kilt they should be proud enough to wear one in their clan's tartan. I think different kilts for different blokes would look quite good - all in the same tartan could be mistaken for 'hired just for the day'.

If a guy has his own kilt, he will probably be keen to wear it, whether he clashes / matches or not! I bet our ancestors didn't worry about not matching when going into battle!

One word of advice, go to a good kilt hire shop to hire jackets for those in the wedding party who are wearing their own - not everyone has the full outfit, as different occasions demand different jackets a Bonny Prince Charlie jacket is really for an evening / black tie function only. We recently used one in the Kingdom Centre in Glenrothes who were very helpful & reasonably priced.
