DBS check delay since may/june.. advice needed

Hi,

I fortunately gained employment the beginning of May 2014 and my dbs was first sent off mid May. Due to an administrative error on my application, it was sent back to my employer and returned again, meaning my application would be processed again from the 22nd of June.

After 9 days of receiving my application it soon went to stage 4 (police checks). In July and August I called regularly and it was still on stage four, and I was informed that the police had a back log of claims. Two weeks ago I called and was advised because the police have had my application for over 60 days, they were able to email the police direct to rush my application, and give them 10 working days to do so.
Although this deadline is actually today, I randomly gave them a call yesterday to see if there was any progress, to which there hasn't been any, and I was informed that when giving my postcode on the security checks, that they had the wrong postcode on the system!

As you can imagine, I'm at my wits end! I'm a student with a little one, and fortunately a partner that has been taking some of the financial burden for the last few months on his small income. I've managed to work a few bank hours in a job I worked in before, but the plan was to work full time during my summer holidays, and I return to study in October. A colleague I worked with mentioned I could claim compensation as its been over the 60 days but I've had others laugh and tell me it's not possible, does anyone have any information or experience on this?

I'm not expecting a huge pay out, but a little something to cover the debts I've occurred in the holidays.

Thank you

  • I was in a similar situation several years ago, lost drb then delay although not so long however I did lose a job because of it and was unemployed for several months longer. Whilst this was happening I met a taxi driver who had a similar delay to yourself and he was seeking compensation for loss of earnings. Sorry don't know anymore details, maybe someone better informed will come along later, but it does seem possible. Good luck with it. I would also consider making your MP aware of your situation as it a requirement and regulated.
