It is not an easy industry to get into.

Does your friend have any training/ experience? Do they have any contacts in the industry?

The first thing that they need to do is get a reputable agent (and I mean reputable). If they are any good, then they will find someone willing to take them on.

Secondly, they need to get experience.

Just reread that - the two steps are interchangeable!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Your friend could make a tape/dvd of themselves showing off their talent for presenting. Try sending copies of it to the bbc/channel 4 etc etc

Also I'd suggest looking in The Stage newspaper. The paper is specifically designed to advertise jobs in that sort of area :)

Got a few friends who are local radio presenters - and one on TV. Only one has an agent so don't think that's a first step - that's what you do once you are a presenter.

Most important thing is to gain experience. apply for a job in sales or promotions, or even just admin to get understanding of media. Hospital radio (does that still exist?) or college radio is/was a common route in.

Intensively competitive so you have to be extra resilient and determined.
