Suitable for home freezing or not??

Options
So i bought this from Mr T's this afternoon for 90p!!

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=255160010

Thought i'd chuck it in the freezer, but just checked and there is no "suitable for home freezing" notice. Does that mean its not safe to do so?? Wouldn't wanna poison anyone. Sure the kids would be more than happy for cake after tea but was hoping to keep it for DS birthday tea in 2 weeks ;)

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. Haven't been on for a while and forget what i'm doing! :o

Bargain. I'd freeze it straight off. I did that with a YS Victoria Sponge from M&S. It was marked 'do not 'freeze', but tasted fine when I had it a few weeks later.

  • Ok, generally frostings don't freeze and defrost well because of the water content making thebm more liable to splitting. You're not gonna get sick from freezing the cake but it will affect the quality of the cake.

I think it's less about whether it'll poison you, and more about what happens to the textures or it going soggy,. Can you freeze butter cream without it separating/going weird? Just wondering, as I've never tried.

I have eaten cakes that mum has made (she will send me home with a slice or three or even half a cake) that has buttercream in it that she has bunged in the freezer. I also freeze cakes with buttercream in them without a problem.

I've made a coffee & walnut cake with tonnes of buttercream frosting & have successfully frozen & defrosted it. It did have a few bobbles of moisture on the buttercream, but nothing terrible. Mind you, it was just coffee + butter + sugar, and I don't know what the Tesco version has, but if the alternative is binning it (or having kids bouncing off the walls a couple of hours before bed !), I'd say give it a go !

  • Thanks everyone.... Its in the freezer! I'll pop back in a couple of weeks and let you all know the outcome. Good excuse for me to sample it before the kids.... "Don't wanna poison you kids, sorry!" Lol

I think its more about the texture as well. Rather than safety, if you could not freeze on that basis you can be sure that it would be on the packet.

I would not have any problem freezing butter cream either. Its not cream after all, and since you can freeze butter.

    Hope the party goes well.
  • I'm sure I've frozen similar.

If it looks a bit lacklustre when it thaws out chuck some chocolate curls over it. (To make chocolate curls, apply potato-peeler to bar of chocolate.)
