Increase in State Pension Age

Options
As you know, anyone born after 6 October 1954 has a new State Pension age of 66 years. This is a loss of approximately £42,000 over the six years for every woman affected. I would urge you all to read and sign the online 38 degrees petition by Anne Keen. Simply google reverse the state pension law.

You think we can afford to let women continue to get their pension at 60?
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Oh c'mon Bob - in this age of equality you should be delighted to subsidise the 'little ladies'...

This could be a long haul - as you know OP hasn't had much agreement on the earlier thread either. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5061475

This has been known about for twenty years & so is nothing new at all. We wanted equality but everything comes at a price, we can't just have the good and pass when it comes to the bad. Now all we need is REAL equal pay!

My husband gets his at 65. That's not equality.

Is he older than you? If you are exactly the same age then once it is fully implemented you will get it at exactly the same time. That is equality.

You are misinformed. As indeed is the author of the petition who states that "By reneging on their promise the Coalition Government have denied a generation of their pension rights. This has had a devastating effect upon those women and men who have worked long and hard believing that they were to retire at 60 and 65 respectively." Which is just plain wrong.

The facts are that the equalisation of pensions was announced way back in 1995 with the increase in the pension age for women to 65 being phased in over the years 2010 to 2020. Then in 2007 the government announced a further phased rise in the state pension age to 66, then 67, and then 68, to take place over the years 2024 to 2046.

What the Coalition said it would do was to bring forward the increase to 66, but that would not be any "sooner than 2016 for men and 2020 for women". However the EU pointed out that sex discrimination was illegal, and so the government compromised on 2018 for everyone. (Or something like that.) So there are a small number of women who 'believed' that would be retiring at 65 before 2020, who now find themselves in the position that they will have to wait until they are 66.

But (a) it's a bit late to complain about it because it was in the Pensions Act 2011 and (b) all complaints should really be addressed to the EU. They are the people who will insist on this equality thing.
• Apologies to previous threader as I realise I am repeating some of your points.

Yes, the petition is about the acceleration in the increase in the State Pension age not the principle of increasing pension age or equalising women with men.
I re-read the petition as I was beginning to wonder if we are all reading the same petition. This is what was the Petition says and what was contained in the Coalition Agreement:
“We will phase out the default retirement age and hold a review to set the date at which the State Pension age starts to rise to 66, although it will not be sooner than 2016 for men and 2020 for women“
However, the Coalition Government have broken this promise by accelerating the rise in the State Pension Age.
Most women accepted the first increase in their pension age with ‘good grace’ and without complaint. However, when the Government emboldened by the lack of protest, targeted the same group of women a second time for another increase, this was when the petition was set up.
The increase in State Pension age could be introduced more fairly and gradually. It was Europe that dictated to the UK Government that it must be accelerated:
"In the same year [2010] Europe decided that it was unfair to raise male retirement age more quickly and so the Spending Review set out another more rapid change for women; the women’s state pension age would now be increased to 65 by 2018 and both men and women would have a retirement age of 66 by 2020”
Interesting, France ignored this directive and reversed the retirement age to 60 years stating:
“We committed to put this measure in place quickly for social justice for those who started working early,..” - Social Affairs Minister Marisol Touraine.
If you agree with the increase in the State Pension age and the equalisation of the State Pension age for men and women but you do not agree with the acceleration in the increase in the State Pension age, then please sign the petition.

No. The petition calls on the government to "Reverse the State Pension Law" and begins with the statement;

By reneging on their promise the Coalition Government have denied a generation of their pension rights. This has had a devastating effect upon those women and men who have worked long and hard believing that they were to retire at 60 and 65 respectively.

This is not true.

Women have known since 1995 that their retirement age was being increased to 65 over the years 2010 to 2020. Women have known since 2007 that their heir retirement age was being increased to 66 from 2024

Besides, as I pointed out;
.... It was Europe that dictated to the UK Government that it must be accelerated: "In the same year [2010] Europe decided that it was unfair to raise male retirement age more quickly ....

So addressing the petition to IDS is rather pointless. It should be addressed to the relevant EU commissioner.

P.S, France might well have reduced the state pension age for some people, but they increased taxes to pay for it. Which taxes do your propose increasing?

If you are not concerned about the principal of increasing pension age, why do both of your threads (here and on the pension board) introduce the topic with the statement that
This is a loss of approximately £42,000 over the six years for every woman affected.

and why is similar also mentioned in the petition itself ("Based on working/waiting 4 more years to receive our pension we will lose at least £21,696 basic State Pension.") ?

I'd say it's a gain, as life expectancy has increased more than 6 years.
