Baking own bread

Options
Hi

My very first post on MSE (although I am a long time lurker, particularly on DFW :o). I moved into my own house 3 months ago after costing everything out, but hadn't anticipated the boiler packing in after 2 days :o So, to cut a long story short, I'm now seriously economising to get back on track.

I'm generally quite good (I think) with money and I don't generally overspend. I have been inspired (by the Bake Off) to make my own bread. Just wondering if anyone else does this and if you find it to be a good idea economy-wise and maybe even taste-wise? I haven't made bread since I was at school but know the gist!

Also, does anyone use any cheaper but good quality cuts of meat? I have only really been used to chicken breast but interested in knowing what everyone else uses for various dishes.

Thank you in advance

  • Hi, and yes I make bread all the time. My two don't want to eat any other kind now. I buy strong flour and can make about 3 loaves out of it, the bags cost about 70-90 pence. It tastes fab. Have made it completely by hand a lot but only use a bread maker these days as I can't knead the bread without my neck aching. Anyway yes it's cheaper, yes it's easy and yes it is much better for you. Have also made dough in the bread maker and then shaped rolls and cooked it in the microwave on convection setting, they are lovely :)
