I picked up some lovely soft Pom Pom type yarn from 99p stores today. My 5 year old would like me to make him a scarf with it, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of using this type of yarn and what size needles are likely to work best?
Thanks

If you look on the ball band it should have details of needle size. On you tube there are video's on how to knit with it, its quite simple once you get going.Clearing the junk to travel light

Here is a pattern I devised to knit a pompom pram cover. I am sure you can just adapt by casting on required number of stitches for a scarf.
Pompom Pram Cover
2x 200 gm balls of Pompom yarn
Small quantity of double knit in matching colour
1pair 4 mm needles
Using double knitting wool, cast on 48 sts. Join in Pompom yarn and work in garter stitch.
Work two stitches between each pompom. Start and end each row with a single stitch between pompom.
Cast off using double knitting yarn when required length has been worked.
Note: to join balls of Pompom yarn, knot two balls together tightly ensuring there is enough yarn to work two stitches between pompom. Knot disappears into finished item especially if yarn is joined in centre of row.0 -
I used 5mm with mine but there are a couple of types of pompom yarn..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

I experimented and found the 4mm suited the yarn I was using as I wanted a firm finish for the pram blanket. 5mm probably better for a scarf to give a slightly looser texture.0

Thanks all, I hadn't thought to look at the ball band!
It said size 5-6, I used fives with one stitch between each pom pom although I doubt it would make much difference for one stitch as it looks like it's the pom poms that dictate the tension. Also had a look on youtube as suggested, glad I did as I wouldn't have thought to cast on with the method used in the tutorial I watched, but it worked well.
It knitted up really fast, only took 1/2 an hour to use a whole 70g ball (about half a scarf).
It is so lovely and soft that I'm off to try and get some more tomorrow as all of my children want one now!0 -

There's a huge knitter thread on here if you're interested, I find it to be really helpful and it's really interesting to see what overs are making.
