New job - security clearance and financial check

I've just started a new job working in internet security* which will involve having a background check done on me.

I've nothing to hide so that doesn't bother me but it apparently includes a check of my credit record. I assume they want to ensure that employees don't have a history of bankruptcy, massive gambling debts or anything that they could fall victim to blackmail from. I'm not that exciting - I have a "fair" credit record (just over 800 points on Experian) with about £3500 of personal debt (excluding mortgage).

Do I need to be concerned about this security clearance or not?

* - I can't elaborate as I hope you'll appreciate.

    I'd say no, they'd probably be more concerned mentioning that you work in a position where enhanced background checks and signing the official secrets act is relevant on open internet forums (when you could have asked your question more ambiguously)

    Having a small amount of personal debt should not be an issue at all.

    Presumably the debt is manageable, and you are up to date with repayments on your debts and have made (in general) all payments on time?

    All accounts are up to date and no late payments in the last three years. I do have two defaults recorded over four years ago one of which is settled and one of which I'm paying the balance back and shows as satisfactory.

    I work in INTERNET security. I do know a thing or two about what can or cannot be posted in the public domain. My comments above constitute no concern whatsoever but I have edited my OP to save any further advice.

    Aren't we all subject to the official secrets act anyway??

    I know people who have been bankrupt and still been fine for pretty high level security clearance. It's a question of assessing potential risk.

  • It wont affect you. The important thing is to be honest.
    I am DV cleared and had 5 defaults at the time of interview
    They did check up on me a year later to ensure I hadnt been naughty with my finances again and I haven't heard from them since.

    Thanks. I'm pretty sure they're looking for people at risk from blackmail or corruption rather than denying people position based on four year old defaults and a measly £3000 worth of personal debt. Well I hope that's the case anyway.

    Having been though it myself years ago, I know that is the case. :)
