How to keep food warm for transporting?

Hi all,

After more advice off you lovely knowledgeable lot please?

I am taking my lovely DF on a date tomorrow night, and instead of the usual restaurant/pub etc I decided to make his favourite meal {Lasagne} and take him to somewhere outdoors, we live in a beautiful area {The Lakes}, we could have a mini bonfire with marshmallows and hot choc and just relax.

To keep the lasagne warm I was going to cook it in those foil trays and then wrap in blankets and put in a cool bag, do you think this is a good idea?

Thanks in advance :)

    :eek::eek::eek:

No, I don't think it's a very good idea at all!
  • Thank you for editing my post...the bonfire, which will be small and contained in a safe area by open water is not what I was seeking advice on.

But thank you for taking the time to reply to my question :)

I would be wary of having bonfires outdoors due to the fire risk.

I think that cooking and packing a lasagne in foil and a blanket and putting it in a coolbox is a good idea), you could take a flask of hot chocolate with you (or fill the flask with boiling water) and take a hot chocolate drink that you make with water and float some marshmallows on the top.
  • Thank you Horace, as long as the lasagne is on the hotter side of warm I'll be happy! It's a different type of date so don't want it to be a flop!

    Thanks again :)

are you driving? do you know anyone who has a electric coolbox, that plugs into a car battery, my parents had one they got from a bootsale for transporting cool items to the caravan in the summer - unkown to them it had a warm setting, and this accidentally got knocked on - and half an hour later the car was filled with the smell of cooking bacon!! their food was ruined - but such an item may keep your lasagne hot.
Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"
  • Haha thanks for the reply sillyvixen! That hasn't half cheered me up! I am driving but don't know anyone with a cool box. I know some cool boxes were good for that, I thought possibly that's why a cool bag would do much the same. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks again

I have some of these for keeping food hot in. A bit like a 'flask' - they work best if you fill them with boiling water - then empty - BEFORE putting hot food in them.

Have used them successfully to transport things like chillies, curries, casseroles to family get-togethers.

If you know somebody who has similar, they are quite good. Come in handy for serving from at Christmas as they look good on the table.
  • they look fab Lily - thanks! I don't know anybody with anything like this but worth a thought for the future :)

I have done this before for a family dinner after my Mums cooker broke down. i cooked the lasagne at home in a glass pyrex dish. I then covered with several layers of foil wrapping all round so the dish was completely enclosed in foil. It was probably around 5 layers of foil. After this I wrapped the whole lot in a large bath towel, then a blanket over that, I finished by putting the whole lot in a plastic carrier bag in case of leaks. It turned out fine was still hot and tasted great. The total time from taking it out of my oven to when we opened it to eat was around 1 hour.

Newspaper is actually a very good insulator and would probably be easier to handle (and clean up if you have any spills) than blankets. Use plenty of it in layers for best effect - perhaps a combination of newspaper for insulation and a blanket for padding and stability in the cooler box would work best.
