Hello everyone,
Where is the best place I can find curry ingredients? I am looking to start making my own from as close to scratch as possible. For example, I know I need ground cumin, ground coriander and garam masala (and perhaps more) for a dopiaza.
Any tips anybody? If you know where to get them then please give an indication of price too!
Thanks!

If you have any Indian or Chinese shops near you that would be the cheapest place to get your bags of spice etc. probably wont be more than a quid each for a biggish bag."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Unless you're planning on making large quantities i'd just get them from the supermarkets. The one i usually run out of most is cumin, all the others last for months. If i bought the bags, they'd be in my cupboard for years ! I'd rather buy smaller amounts.0 -
There's a health food shop near me that sells herbs and spices loose, you can buy from 25g up. I tend to buy small amounts as they go past their best quite quickly. You might like to buy some ground almonds too, I put them in my curries.Over futile odds

Indian shops near me sell bags of basic spices at 59p for 100g
Tesco own brand spices are mainly 95p for 37g
Some supermarkets have the 100g bags for about £1.
Imo, stay away from the supermarket jars because they're a rip-off. Why would you pay the same for a third of the amount? Just store the bags in an airtight container once you open them, and they'll keep reasonably well.
I'd start off with cumin, ground coriander, garam masala, turmeric and chilli powder. I think they're the absolute essentials. You'll also need ginger and garlic in some form. I buy mine in big bags of frozen cubes (about 75p for 400g) because they're cheap and I don't waste any that way.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j

Cheap cheap cheap from any Asian food shop.0

Check out Steenbergs, they have organic spices, more expensive but the quality is exceptionally good and their spices are always extremely fresh. Worth investing in! And they do some bulk and some special offers too.

They sell most of them in aldi. Much cheaper than other supermarkets. I do agree though an Asian supermarket is the cheapest place.0

I buy all mine from Tesco. The bagged ones are much better value for money than jarred ones. The ones I have in the cupboard are mainly 'East End' brand, priced at 99p per 100g, and I've had good results with these. They also sell 'Indus' brand in larger sizes, priced from £1.09-£1.99 for 300g/400g bags.0

If I am anywhere near my sis-in-laws at Faversham I buy at Macknades Farm shop.Their food is gorgeous and its walking around Harrods food hall without the prices of Harrods. Its not just a farm shop they stock stuff from all over the world and if you can't find it there they will try to get it for you.brilliant for bagged loose herbs and spices and not in the least expensive0
