Plus size clothing for gym/aerobic classes etc

Hi everyone,

I've finally decided to join a gym and need to find something to wear! Any recommendations of where to find gym clothing for the larger lady? :)

  • hi motherofthekid when I joined the gym in Jan this year I struggled to find "gym" clothes as I was a size 30/32 so I wore leggings and a plain cotton t shirt and the best fitting bra I had as sports bras stop at around a 40 back size over the months as I lost weight I just wore smaller sizes until I could fit into a pair of cycling shorts that were 3xl from sports direct for about 9 pound and I have started to wear a vest top but that is from a confidence thing because evans /yours clothing sold them in a size 32 I don't do aerobic classes but I do have a weekly personal trainer session who makes me and my fat bits run jump do floor exercises so I would feel confidant that the leggings and t shirt would be fine as would the shorts im wearing now. Keep having your bust measured for a sports bra as this really helped me not only for comfort but it was one less wobble I had to try and cover up .don't forget trainers I wore old ones I had when I started but new trainers which were meant for the gym really helped with sore feet and a tip passed on to me by my sports mad son buy running socks to wear as they have padding in and absorb quite a lot of sweat they are in sports direct about 4 pound for 2 pairs but made my feet less sweaty and therefore more comfortable hope this helped
  • Thanks don1975. Good to hear you're doing well. I have started swimming, my local leisure centre had a 6 week pass for £25. I will hit the shops for some leggings, tee shirts and thick socks.

Regarding the sports bra, as my chest has always been my best asset :rotfl: I think I will struggle to buy one at present. An RAF friend recommended wearing two bras, which I will try, but I have no intention of "jumping" or "bouncing" about at this stage!
  • lol I had no intention to move more than a dead goldfish when I started but my punishment trainer lol sorry personal trainer thought other wise so I had to adopt a gaffer tape mode solution lol so a bra for me was essential good luck and try to enjoy your lessons
  • Firstly, well done for joining the gym and good luck.

I joined my local gym a couple of months ago and have managed to lose 20lbs so far so keep motivated and most importantly find things you enjoy doing to keep you motivated to keep going.

On the subject of sports wear I just go in cheap leggings and t-shirts. I can't find any sports bras to fit me either so have just gone for a good "normal" armour plated type job and it's doing OK for me so far.

Sports direct is good for cheap branded sportswear if you are that way inclined but I just go for cheap and cheerful supermarket leggings myself.
  • Mountain Warehouse do running/ cycling lightweight wicking tops very cheap. I have a couple of the tshirts and they go upto a mens XXXL which I think is about a 48 or 50 chest.

Definatley get some proper running trainers because you can really hurt your feet from running in fashion trainers. I know because I have done it.
Go somewhere like up and running and try some on and ask for advice. If you cant afford a pair from there, write down the recommendations, tell them you'll have a think and get them off Ebay.
  • My current gym outfits staples are from SimplyBe - they are comfy and wash well too :)
  • Taking Shape have a sportswear range, online and in their shops as well http://www.takingshape.com/uk/fashion/activewear.html
  • Thanks for your replies - I quite like the look of Taking Shape.

So I've joined, I just need to go in and complete the paperwork. I have a gym induction booked for Wednesday 7am. Shopping at the weekend for very large and long tee shirts, thick socks and some leggings.

    Here we go !!!

Talking of sports bras, I've just invested in one from Less Bounce. I am a 36J and have been wearing two underwired bras to run in up until getting the sports bra (imagine the pain!) The new bra is much much more secure and comfortable, nothing spills out and I can change the straps to a racer back. Highly recommended!

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks Melanie, just what I need. They have a Panache sports bra which is the brand which fits me well. I will just email them as they don't have my size, I hope they can suggest an alternative that will fit. :j
