Getting Started Freelancing

Ok, not one to be kept down, after losing a huge wad of my income today I am going to look to try and supplement my income with some freelancing as my main skills are in PHP web programming and search engine optimisation.

unfortunately having not freelanced in a long long time, I dont know where to go about getting some clients (even at a much reduced rate, I just need money to feed my family first)..

anyone know of anywhere?

  • What sort of freelancing are you looking at doing? Direct to the client small projects or doing work for existing agencies?

Assuming its the former then there are many websites out there like guru, peopleperhour, freelancing etc where you can bid for work on projects but you will often be up against people in indian and other lower cost countries so you will have to work out why people should pay your rates rather than $3/hr etc

You also need to ensure your current employment contract doesnt prohibit this.
  • I'm self employed so freelancing is not a contractual issue, I know about odesk freelancer etc but can't beat the Asians on price and despite bidding at minimum wage.

My skills are in php web development, linux server admin etc

I personally prefer slightly bigger projects than just simple change this bit of text, where the amount of time you spend on the admit for longer than the work!

  • Then bid on bigger projects! Differentiate yourself from smaller markets and clients. Find clients who prefer quality over quantity.

Freelance websites are next to useless unless you make connections - Or have a very specific niche that is targeted within your market.
