Help - good place to buy cycles wanted

Hi,

I have a pretty good idea of teh sort of bike I want but I would like to know if anyone has come across any high volume, lower profit margin outlets. I'm looking for the Ikea of bike shops!

Any help greatly appreciated.

I've bought a mountain bike from Leisurelakes before; they are high volume and looking to shift the bikes fast.
A google search will throw up some clearance outlets like, I think, Bonthrone bikes etc.

Hi,

THansk guys. Evans have an impressive looking website but the bikes I've found they sell are RRP and can usually be had 15% cheaper without any real searching.

I'm going to go to Evans today and decide upon a bike and then just hunt the web for the best deal on it.Evans certainly look far preferrable to going to Halfords, where the kid knew sod all about bikes.

Have a look at www.edinburghbicycle.com They have a very good range and their own brand bikes are of an extremely high quality.

Decathlon might be worth a look, they aren't bad prices anyway but they sometimes have bikes on special offer.

Bear in mind that if you buy from a local shop, they'll set it up safely for you, and may well include extras like free quarterly servicing for life.

There are bargains to be had, mainly by waiting until autumn and picking up last years' models. I gather that importers and manufacturers exercise tight control over retail prices of current models, and retailers that offer sizeable discounts (i.e. over 10%) are likely to find it hard to obtain replacement stock. Discounts of discontinued models apparently go unpoliced, however.

Sterling House have a pretty poor reputation for the quality of the bikes they sell. They are frequently characterised as heavy, poorly assembled and even unsafe by regulars on the uk.rec.cycling newsgroup.

I thought about getting a cheap bike as a starter, but decided a poor experience might put me off for life, so went for an entry-level Ridgeback model, which I'm very happy with so far.

If you're employed, and you plan to use the bike for commuting, then look into whether your employer participates in the government's Cycle to Work scheme. Like the short-lived Home Computer Initiative, it allows you to lease a bike and/or accessories from your employer, paying for it out of your pre-tax income (i.e. an effective discount of upto 40%) and then almost certainly purchase it at a 'fair market value' (5% seems to be the accepted value) at the end of the lease.
