A debt with NPower - advice needed

Hello,

I'm looking for some help and advice with regards to a debt with NPower.

Last week I received two different letters (one from a Buchanan Clark & Wells and the other from Debt Managers Ltd) regarding debts in my name, both asked for me to call them. I didn't do this due to there being no information about what these debts were.

Today I received another letter from Buchanan Clark & Wells, a final notice informing me that they have been instructed by NPower Ltd to recover a debt of £953.11 plus administrative costs of £119.14. This account was for gas supply to a flat in Hull from the 9/2/2013 till 17/5/2014, I moved out of this flat in February 2011.

So now I'm wondering whether I'm liable for these debts and what I should do next. I've had a look on the Citizens Advice website and it seems to indicate that I wouldn't be liable even though I don't believe I gave NPower any notice that I was leaving.

I've been in contact with my ex landlord who has informed me that there has been two other tenants since I moved out and he should be able to get me proof of dates and names etc.

I'm considering emailing B,C&W to move the communication along quicker, should I pass on the information about these other tenants to them?

Any advice on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

    No, you are not, clearly.

and what I should do next.

Write to them and tell them you left those premises in 2011 and therefore cannot be liable for a debt incurred in 2013. Tell them to jog on.
I've been in contact with my ex landlord who has informed me that there has been two other tenants since I moved out and he should be able to get me proof of dates and names etc.

All the better, send a copy of those details to them and TELL them that you expect a written acknowledgement that you are not culpable and that any action has been forestalled.
I'm considering emailing B,C&W to move the communication along quicker, should I pass on the information about these other tenants to them?

Email if you want, but always back it up with a physical letter. Nothing less counts in the eyes of the law if you need to defend this in court.

  • Thank you FireWyrm

I was just a little worried because they seem to have my name for the account.

My ex-landlord is currently working on finding tenancy agreements.

I have written a letter and will be posting tomorrow by recorded mail.
  • Ok, so the letter was delivered to B, C & W last Thursday and I have yet to hear back from them.

Yesterday I finally received a second letter from Debt Managers Ltd headlined ''Notice of account transfer to new external agency''. This debt again is for NPower Ltd but it fails to outline the supply address and the supply period. Strangely the amount is slightly smaller at £931.21 for the debt and £102.43 for the administration. The client reference numbers are also slightly different, one ending in 410 the other 420.

So I'm wondering if this is the same thing and if its usual to deal with two different debt companies.

    Thank you.

I guess it is possible that they are pinning multiple delinquent accounts on you. Same process as before. You are not liable and they are required to prove you are. Letter as before. Rinse and repeat.

  • Thanks again FireWyrm,

I received a reply from B, C & W asking for a copy of my tenancy agreement which I should be able to arrange and also for meter readings which I probably won't be able to get.

It says that the final bill may need to be estimated if no meter readings are provided, just a bit worried there going to try and screw me over on this. I was always up to date with my payments up till the date I left.

However, just send them proof you left when you say you did, then they have to prove otherwise if they want there pound of flesh.
