Thank you yorkie2.
I cant take a photo of ticket but I will put the details on here. Yes it is an Advance ticket with a Senior railcard discount applied.
STD ADVANCE ONE NIL SGL
SNR 16.SEP.14 31119 7350720201
from Leagrave * price £15.80X
To Plymouth * Route + AP SLOUGH Validity BOOKEDTRAINONLY
The booking confirmation was from Trans Pennine Express and the details are Depart leagrave 9.29 travel by Train service provider First Capital Connect to station Farringdon arrives 10:15
departs Farringdon at 10:32 travel by London Underground to station London Paddington arrives at 10:51
departs London Paddington at 11:06 travel by Train service provider First Great Western to station Plymouth arrives 14:36 ( seats reserved: Coach: C Seats: 38 ).
I know the train from Paddington leaves at 11.06 and he has to get that one or he will have to pay extra for the next one but he just needs clarification for what train he can use from the Leagrave to London part ie. can he get any train that morning without a penalty fare or is is it the 9.29 one.

Thank you for your time.
There is no concept of "off peak" with this ticket, as it is an Advance ticket.
This means that it is only valid on the booked train - the 11:06 from Paddington, and "appropriate" connecting trains.
There is no definition of "appropriate" in this context, but the latest train that has a valid connection is the 09:29 from Leagrave. If he was to miss the 09:29 frim Leagrave, the ticket would be valid but he would not be covered in the event of any delay. Taking an earlier train is perfectly acceptable (though if it was a lot earlier, say 08:00, it might be difficult to justify it as an appropriate connecting service).
Providing he is at Leagrave station in good time for the 09:29 service, then he is absolutely covered in the event of any delays occurring on FCC or London Underground, and will be permitted to take the next available train.
If he wants to allow more time, he can take an earlier train than the 09:29. The ticket is likely to be accepted by the barrier at any time, but if it is not, I would be surprised if the station staff attempted to deny access to an earlier train. If they did, and a delay occurred on FCC, causing the train from Paddington to be missed, I would be sure to mention this when claiming Delay Repay from FCC!
I agree changing at Farringdon is the easiest interchange, by far. Be sure to take a train heading (westbound) towards Hammersmith ('Hammersmith & City Line'), this will be direct to Paddington (platform 15).
At Paddington, the onward train to Plymouth is booked from platform 2 (check - as platform alterations can occur), and the footbridge allows direct access between platforms if the stairs can be used. If the use of the lift is required, circulation via Platform 1 is required.0 -
Thank you for the advice yorkie2.
It's good to get some correct info on the tickets.
I have suggested that my dad gets an earlier train say the 08:43 or 08:59 to give him plenty of time.
He is 74 and although fairly fit he has a wheeled suitcase so he wont want to be dragging that all over the place.
It would be nice if all this info was very easy find and not confusing to lots of people but maybe its there and I wasn't looking hard enough for it.
Once again thank you for the great advice.0
