Ynab

I am wondering about using this in order to keep a handle on our spending etc.

Has any one on the board used it? is it easy to use and is it worth the money if you go past the 34 day free trial.

  • I like the layout and the look and feel of YNAB but I found the budgeting style and rules really frustrating. It centres around the idea of giving every £1 of your income a 'job' - so it has to be allocated.

If you spend less than you budgeted in one area then what you saved has to be pushed to a different pot - debts, savings.

I ended up feeling like I was keeping it updated for the sake of it. Having to fudge figures to make YNAB reflect my true account balance. It wasn't influencing my money movement or spending/saving habits so it didn't really teach me anything about my money.

Perhaps that's because I have a pretty basic budget in mind already - I was hoping it would help me to fix any leaks in my current budget but so far it hasn't.

No it doesn't, you can leave it where it is if you like. I love YNAB and it has definitely helped me manage my money better. I feel that if you are having to fudge figures to make it match your account balance then you are not using it properly.

I use it and it definitely helps me.Yes I have had to shift money around sometimes but that's a good thing-it means I don't forget that I had to use £15 from the clothes money to pay for some shoes-I add little notes to remind myself how much I want to have in each category. Entering all the spending means I know where the overspending is happening and what steps I need to take to fix it.
