Cheap DFW break ideas please!

A friend of mine & I want to have a cheap 3 day break prob in Oct. Any suggestions from you fully versed DFW's on where to look? Probably with her son so would need to be child friendly and both would love to go somewhere like Dublin or Edinburgh but on cheapie this may be overly optimistic!!! All suggestions gratefully appreciated!

    Hi fishface.

I've been to Dublin several times and have stayed at the Youth Hostel there a couple of times. It's an old convent and they still have the stained glass in the dining room (I think it's the old chapel). The phone boxes are also housed in confessionals!

I'm pretty sure they do small family rooms as well as the more traditional dorms and you get a pretty good mix of people staying there. The staff are great too and very good for hints of cheap stuff to do.

Breakfast is included in the cost and there's a fairly big kitchen with a big table if you want to cook instead of eat out.

It's walking distance into town (downhill going, uphill coming back!).

    Some reviews here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186605-d209097-Reviews-Dublin_International_Youth_Hostel-Dublin_County_Dublin.html

There's loads to do there too - check out Trinity College for the Book of Kells, take a boat trip down the Liffey or if you're feeling flush take her little boy for a pony and trap ride around the city!

Getting there, I've been by plane and ferry. Ferry is cheaper but it's takes an age. However, there is a good bus service from the port into town so you needn't worry about extra taxi fares which might be a consideration if you're flying in.
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

Ah, that's nice of you! Good to see you too! I see by your sig that you're making great strides in all areas! Well done!

How old is the little 'un? Only the Guinness in Dublin is to die for, so maybe you and mum can sample a few jars? Take a spoon for the froth!

Oh - and a top tip for afternoon tea is Bewleys. There are a few branches (think I counted three last time) but the cakes are definitely child friendly! They do a cracking breakfast too which will set you up for the whole day. Pics here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g186605-i90-k288268-Dublin_in_October-Dublin_County_Dublin.html

(Oh, I want to go now!)

and flying the flag for Scotland....Edinburgh is great too...
The Scottish tourist board website is www.visitscotland.com and has lots of accomodation for all budgets. The castle is great for adults and kids and there's a museum of childhood (free) in the Royal Mile.
I love Dublin too though... neither city very cheap for us DFWs though.
