How did you/will you celebrate your final payment?

I should make my final payment in December. I want to go into the bank and pay the last couple of hundred in cash first thing on a Saturday morning. Then off for a champagne breakfast in a fancy bar! :j

Champagne still in the fridge, not opened yet, despite getting there. Strange really, fantastic feeling, but just focussed my mind on saving for retirement so no big celebration.
Like your idea though, doing it in person and walking out with a grin from ear to ear on a dry, chilly winters morning and a feeling of weightlessness on your shoulders....
Unfortunately as I bank with FD this was not an option but enjoy, whatever you decide.0 -
We paid ours by a CHAPS payment (due to Barclays inability to arrange a drinks event in a brewery) and had a bottle of Aldi Prosecco that evening.
Tbh, it hasn't really sunk in yet (it's been a month) & we've struggled to get out of the frugal routine we've been in for so long!"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." William Morris0 -
I suspect I won't actually be allowed to pay in person in cash, and it'll be a boring e-payment!
I know exactly what you both mean about frugal habits or salting away for retirement. I've been overpaying for so long that I've have lost most spendthrift inclinations; or rather the slow-leakage ones, I can still do the odd big blowout!Save £12k in 2022 thread #7:

I was ready to clear my mortgage 7 years ago. My lender wanted a redemption fee of £145. So I made a capital payment that brought the mortgage down to £5.00. My repayments dropped to £0.02 per month, and I kept my £145.00 in a savings account for another 6 years, while the lender kept my deeds safe and secure, sent me letters every time the interest rate changed, sent me annual statements, and collected my tuppence a month by direct debit.
And people wonder why the banks got into trouble.0 -
No big celebration for me either as I was on an early shift the following day!
Just be warned it will take a while (months) before the enormity of what you've achieved really does start to sink in...
I still have to remind myself sometimes
