But what is inappropiate? should we not have any comps from Banks on after they robbed us all blind ? Energy companies because they are still robbing us blind? the list could go on I think people are adult enough to make their own minds up if their morals would keep them from entering any certain kind of comp because of which company is running it0

But comps are taking from them not giving to them, I don't see a problem it doesn't mean we would ever do business with them.0
-
I must admit I don't enter them, but.....
I'd rather people were taking their prizes off them, than giving them money by taking out a loan...
As Diddlydoop says, I think it's down to the individual.
For example, I don't drink alcohol (this isn't for religious reasons), and if I did drink I would likely get into as much trouble as someone taking out a loan with one of those sharks, but I don't have a problem with those comps on MSE. My moral compass just lets me press the red cross and move on.
There is, of course, the added 'issue' of the reaction of MSE towards the companies you mention, but I think if we're all sensible and allow ourselves to be guided by what we think is right individually, we can let them be posted. The extra publicity these companies get via their comps does concern me.0 -
All of those companies, be them banks or your payday lenders provide a sevice that millions of people make good, sensible use of. I've never partaken in a payday loan myself but Im sure to a lot of people that have did so as they provide some fast and easily accessible extra funds when they need it (for an emergency such as a car fix, boiler fix etc etc).
Nobody can say better than the customer themself if they can actually afford to take out that borrowing, so I think in a lot of cases it's the customers fault when they get into problems with repaying, or having to roll over the debt.
I don't mean to say all the people have having problems with these lenders is because of their own stupidty, 'cause obviously things happen that you can't expect, but I do think a lot of it is down to people taking out loans that they know they can't afford to repay ... Im not sure how much you can blame the provider for that.0 -
I'd just like to say thanks for the Amazon vouchers Wonga.
If you want to exclude sites then Bookmakers/National Lottery etc should be first followed by any sites offering alcohol as prizes folowed by those offering chocolate/sweets etc etc.0 -

I agree... but only on the days, when I'm on a diet... :rotfl:
Or those run by dress companies that only supply sizes 4-12...
mjm3346 makes a really good point - there are lots of 'evils' out there, which are as destructive as payday loan companies etc. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind thinking, "Oh, they've got a competition, so I'll take out a payday loan with extortionate interest rates". It's not like you have to be a loan holder to enter the competitions.
And then where do we stand with regards religious beliefs? MSE would claim, I'm sure, to be welcoming to all religions, but what about the alcohol comps, or those run by butchers for pork meat boxes etc? Someone who is very devout may take offence at those prizes being on offer.
There's always someone to offend / potentially 'harm' on every competition... And that's why I like the presence of the red button0 -
If MSE don't like a particular site, they block the URL.0

just get rid of all the ones that are on about cakes
i have no morals or ethics so i don't care who a prize is coming from0 -
I agree with all the sensible people here who maintain that we should be able to police ourselves and if we can't then perhaps we're not ready for computer use! I don't enter the Wonga ones because I don't much care for that kind of business but I'd defend to the death the right of any other presumably sane person to make up their own mind on these things! I don't enter comps for sweets/chocolate/junk food because I personally don't eat those things but heaven forfend the day I decide that nobody else can enter them either - that's just insanity! I don't drink either but I do always have a go for a nice bottle of whisky or JD or something with it in mind that they'd make a nice gift. So no, OP, there's nothing about your theory to agree with from my point of view!0

While any of us might personally think a competition is inappropriate, that's not going to be the view of everyone.
This is a competitions board, and they run competitions. They aren't on the banned list, so posting them is valid.
So just ignore them and enter the ones that you are comfortable entering.0
