Websites tracking which link you came from?

Hi all!
I started comping last year, quit for a bit, and came back at the beginning of this year. Since then I have seen (very briefly) someone mention a Firefox app that lets you stop websites from seeing if you came to their page from a MSE link. Since then I've been wondering:
a) if this is really an issue and if some companies reject entries that have come through MSE?
b) is there an equivalent for Chrome that someone could point me towards?
Sorry if I'm being really obtuse asking this; I tried looking back through a few stickies and doing some keywork searches on the forums but I couldn't find the original mention or anything else, although I am known for being a bit of a numpty and missing things sometimes (I blame my quickdraw, mouse scroll wheel).
Anyway, any help or further info would be really appreciated and thank you for your patience! :T
