£12k is very high, but it may be the micro inverters as much as the panels that are raising the price...?

I paid basically between a "normal" quote and your quote for Sunpower panels for which only 12 panels are required for 4kWp.

Leaving space on your roof with higher efficiency panels may be an advantage if you want to add further panels or solar thermal at a later date. If you take the view that panel efficiency will continue improving, and storage will come along to allow you to store and timeshift the energy, that might be wise. We could probably add another 8 panels on our SE/SW facing roofs which we wouldn't be able to do with 16 "normal" panels.
