offered job wages below minimum wage

My son who is 19 & a third year apprentice electrician ( he lost his last job:o), has been offerred a job to finish is apprentiship.They have said his wage will be 2.25 ph.He desperately needs this Job, but am i right in thinking this wage is illegal

The national minimum wage for his age is £4.45

As he is an apprentice (aged 18-26) minimum wage rules do not apply for the first year of his apprenticeship.
