Food after wisdom tooth removal

  • I am very grateful to everyone who has posted on this thread. When I made a suggestion it was because I had a filling that gave me a lot of pain. I have just been told today that a wisdom tooth needs to come out. I am devastated: I have never had an extraction and find any treatment very stressful.

This thread has given me lots of ideas: what to eat, what to expect. The bit about losing weight is interesting...

If it's any help, the pain caused by the tooth needing to be removed is far worse than the tooth actually being removed in my and my friends/family's experience, (I asked EVERYONE before having my tooth out!) I was pretty scared too but by far it was the best thing to do.
  • Jenniewb, the wisdom tooth in question does not hurt. I have known for decades that it is lying on its side and affecting the next tooth, which has been filled. The dentist wants it to come out as it has decayed a little. I always knew that I could not escape forever, but as a dentist told me last year that it is best left alone if it isn't hurting, yesterday's recommendation came as a huge shock.

I had mine out a couple years ago. After being picked up from the hospital my sister in law drove me home and we stopped at Tesco to get soft food. Don't do this! Get it beforehand, I was still quite high lol, kept dropping things!

I mostly had luke warm soup, jelly pots, custard is also good and also soft cheese, cheesespread triangles (I eat these on their own anyway!), yoghurts, as someone else bananas. Also high energy drinks too, I'm not talking red bull, but things like lucazade and meal replacement drinks, even Slim fast ones will work! Or just go for milk shakes lol

Edit: also mashed potato is perfect if you want warm food!
  • I had all four wisdom teeth out in one go. I lived on scrambled egg, yoghurt, mousse, smoked salmon and supernoodles. Basically anything I could mush with my tongue on the roof of my mouth and swallow.
That voice in your head that says you can’t do this is a LIAR!

  • The poster who advised getting everything ready in advance is very sensible. I am adding drinking straws to my list.

I am having an extraction tomorrow of a rear molar in which the nerve has died and the tooth is cracked. I have been looking at advice on the web and one of the things I read is NOT to use straws as the suction can dislodge the blood clot on the site of the extraction. That may well not apply to removal of wisdom teeth of you have stitches.
