Must be tough working and trying to study.

I did take a week long CeMap course when I first started out - I cant remember who it was with but I did pass all 3 papers so well worth the cost, probably a grand I imagine.

Made it back many times over.

People that get fed up when confronted with large amounts of detail to study are not suited to be mortgage brokers.

Sorry, but there it is - wading through the detail is a major part of the job.

Thanks for the helpful post. did you have any prior knowledge of the financial industry before getting on the course? also as to the class, what skill set did they have? were they all experienced?

Did you get a pre-study guide prior to the course? and was it imperative to go through it before the training?

I had worked directly for a lender and to be honest decided to become a broker as I thought I could do it better than others I had come into contact with. We used to have groups of brokers in to explain the "new" mortgage regulation, going back 10 years now.

Yes I think I did get pre-study material.

Knowing CeMap in and out is just the start but best of luck I wish you well.

  • Ok I've been on one. I have come to the conclusion that these training programs are a WASTE of money. Yes it is fast paced as it says on the tin. But in no way are they designed for someone new with little knowledge of the industry. So all reassuring over the emails prior to getting on course are misleading. Although they advertise as no knowledge required. Once you enrol they strongly recommend you go through their pre course revision before coming onto the course. Whicj is alot of reading on the full module..

So in reality you could have done all that yourself initially.

Anyways I'm far from ready for the exam. I'll do some further reading and book my exam.

I will not be going onto any other course for the other modules. I best save the money and do it myself.
  • For those who have a good knowledge of the industry. What would you recommend me to do / read to improve my knowledge of the mortgage world? Studying Cemap 1 , I have realised alot of it as about the industry as an overall in terms of taxation , stocks shares, investments and compliance.

The way I did it was to:
    1) Do a mock exam - work out what I know, what I dont know and where I guessed lucky.
    2) Read the book.
    3) Do another mock exam and work out what I know, what I dont and what I guessed.
    4) Go back over the bits I dont know as well as I need to.
    5) re do another mock test.
    6) Repeat 4 and 5.

I failed CF1 (equivelant to Cemap 1) twice. I then passed RO1 (which is a higher level) first time.

There is no short cuts, read the book understand as much as you can and memorise as much as you can and then sit the exam. Once passed you can forget it all as you will never use it as a broker.

  • Thanks for that. Seems like a good revision technique. I will have a go at that.

In terms of general knowledge of the industry that will help in being am adviser. What things shall I read or look into?
