Making Cakes without Sugar.

Options
I've got a plum tree & two apple trees in the garden and they're weighed down with fruit, i've been giving it away to friends & neighbours but still got loads. I was going to make some cakes but i've just been watching 'inside out' on Bbc and they were talking about the danger of to much sugar, diabetes etc. I think they said we should limit ourselves to 35gm a day, that doesn't sound much.
So my question is, can i make a cake without sugar ?
I have Weetabix of a morning and don't put sugar on, some dried raisins and porridge adds any taste. Could i add the porridge to a cake ? Or i've got honey in the fridge, or would that be counted as sugar ?
Any ideas ?

I have been sugar free for some months now. I use Xylitol instead of sugar. it looks the same and they say you should use the same amount as if for real sugar (though it may be my taste buds, everything is sweeter) so you need less. Also adding apples to cakes instead of sugar works - just use the same weight in stewed apple. works especially well for fruit cake.

However, I have stewed apples and blackberries and did need to add xylitol.

Sugar free is great - I ain't never goin back :D

  • Hello, yes you can make cake without sugar. Most ways I've used seem to use fruit as the sweetener, so you are still getting sugar from the fruit but it's not as sweet and not empty calories, like white sugar is. Honey would still count as sugar I think, though the less refined ones still have lots of good stuff going for them. Bananas and apple pur!e are often substituted for sugar, or you could look in to sugar substitutes like stevia. I'm sorry I didn't have any recipes to hand but if you look it up on line I'm sure you will come across lots, especially with all the sugar free challenges that seem to be about!

    Hope that helps a bit....
