New job - paid by cheque??!!

in Cutting tax
Hi all,
Don't know whether this is the right place to ask but I would really appreciate some advice on an income tax problem. I started a new job last night with a small family run firm and was taken aback when they said I was paid by cheque. It's only 6 hours a week, about £6:50 an hour.
However, it's a third job as I work as a civil servant in the week and have a retail job on sunday. Both these jobs are paid in the normal manner with all deductions made on my pay slip by my employer.
I'm the only person in the new workplace who has other jobs so my new colleagues will be earning below the tax threshold. I will ask my new boss for advice tonight, but appreciate it's my responsibility. Equally, I don't want to jack in the job just because of this concern.
What do I need to do to ensure I pay the appropriate tax on my third job when I get my first cheque?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Payment by cheque has nothing to do with tax. It doesnt matter if you are paid in cash, cheque, bank credit. Tax and NI have to be dealt with the same.
Have you informed this employer you have other jobs and what your income is from those?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
Tell your new employer to deduct BR tax - he should do anyway0

Thanks for your replies. Yes, my employer is aware that I have two other jobs, maybe he's already thought about addressing the tax angle. I will speak to him tonight.
Thanks again.0 -
Thanks for your comments Jimmo. I spoke to my new boss last night and everything is fine. He was already aware I would have to be paid in a different manner. He has a few full time staff who are paid (after tax) with a direct transfer to their bank accounts. They then receive a proper pay statement showing all appropriate deductions.
Well, all I can say is I hope I like the job now after all this worry! It would be ironic if it turned out to be a load of crud..............:o0
