Off sick?

I know you don't have to have a medical certificate for the first 7 days off sick but does this include weekends or only working days? Also if I were off Monday to Friday but Tuesday is my day off does that count as 4 or 5 days.
One more question! Do you have to ring your employer by law or can you write in to say you are sick?
Thanks for any replies

The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie

You still need a self cert - just not a Dr's note.
7 days is from the first day of sickness and ALL days are counted. So it would be 5 days. Your working and non working days all count.
How you contact your employer will be down to your T&C's.

I don't think I've ever been in a job where I wasn't required to call in sick on the first day of absence, but after that it's not been required to phone. I usually have phoned on day 2 (if I'm still not coming in) to give a guesstimate of my return, but that's as a courtesy to my colleagues.
In one job I was required to call before 10 am, and to speak to a manager, so DO check your t&c.Signature removed for peace of mind0
