Experian Credit Report Issues

Morning All,

In March this year I applied for a credit card with the Halifax. I was in the branch when I did it and one of the assistants filled the form in. Once she had filled the form in, she gave it to me to check. I checked it and it was all correct.
Fast forward a week or so, I recieve all the paper work. I was given a £500 limit and the highest possible interest rate in that card (19.9%).
I phoned them up to find out why I had been given such a terrible deal and was told that that is what they were prepared to offer me. I cancelled the credit there and then.
I then checked my experian credit report. On the check that Halifax did, they have put in that I had been at my current address for 7 months. The form that the assistant filled in (the one I checked) said 1 year and 8 months, which was correct at the time.

I contacted Halifax and they told me that Experian could change it, but Halifax could do nothing. I contacted Experian, they said that they can change it, but will only do so if they have permission from Halifax. Experian have been trying to contact Halifax for the last couple of months, but they are not responding.

I called the Halifax Specialist Lending Team today and was told that this minor error will not affect anything. I informed then that regardless of whether it won't affect anything, I want it corrected........they put me through to the Late Payments team......who sent me back to the Specialist Lending Team.......who, again, told me that there was nothing they could do.

My questions are:
Am I worrying about nothing?
Are the halifax right that this minor error will not affect anything?
Who should be correcting it?
Shall I just go and sit in my local branch of Halifax until someone looks in to it properly?

One last note, I have never had any problem getting credit before, I am not at all financially stretched and I am planning on applying for a mortgage in the next few months and don't want to have problems because of this.

I apoligise for it being so long, any advice is gratefully recieved.

Thanks
Ed

I contacted Experian, they said that they can change it, but will only do so if they have permission from Halifax. Ok this is true, they will put a note on your file saying that the content is disputed by yourself and is currently under investigation. Experian have been trying to contact Halifax for the last couple of months, but they are not responding.

I have had the same problem with Halifax with regards to their fraud prevention team, what a joke! I keep getting passed through the departments....

    My questions are:
Am I worrying about nothing? No, you shouldnt be worried, just concerned and do the right things to get this resolved for you
Are the halifax right that this minor error will not affect anything? It does effect your credit how long you have been at an address, especially when it is linked in to the electorlal role. If one thing says one thing and the other says another then of course it will flag up. Even if they are, it is incorrect information, which is not right, Im sure if it was the other way round then they would be at you as you put the wrong info down about your salary e.t.c.
Who should be correcting it? Halifax! But at the moment it seems like your 'having a dog and barking yourself!' WHY SHOULD YOU BE CHASING SOMETHING UP AND SPENDING MONEY OVER SOMETHING WHICH ULTIMATELY IS NOT YOUR FAULT? YOU SHOULDNT!!
Shall I just go and sit in my local branch of Halifax until someone looks in to it properly? No.... this is pointless, you need to go up as high as you can to get this resolved. Chief Executive is a good place to start. Then you need to combine this with the Ombudsman, FSA and the Information commissioner...

One last note, I have never had any problem getting credit before, I am not at all financially stretched and I am planning on applying for a mortgage in the next few months and don't want to have problems because of this.
Again this is a minefield!!! please see my thread in the Credit cards section... SAY NO TO COMPUTER SAYS NO I am trying to raise support for people exactly like you who are having so many problems

I apoligise for it being so long, any advice is gratefully recieved.

    Thanks
    Ed

Please have a look at my post and comment as necassary. If you would like the Chief executives details I will gladly give them to you....I will chase mine up today also!!

It is about time people stood up and said they were not accpting it!

    Hi Wayoflife,

Thanks for the advice. Experian have put a note on my report saying that I am disputing the entry.
If you could pass the Chief Exec's details on to me, I would appreiciate it. Its just so annoying when, I have done nothing wrong yet I am being penalized for it!!
Oh well, I will take your advice and report back with my progress.
    Thanks Again
    Ed
  • Its been a bit of a battle. After six letters and too many phone calls to remember, Halifax have agreed to correct the error.
I have just checked it online and it already been done.

I went for the hassling approach and, although it was rather stressful, it worked.
    Happy Days!

    Cheers
