Refurbishing Kitchen

Options
We have a 10 year old Tara Beech shaker style kitchen. In case it matters the doors are solid wood but the centre panel is veneer. We have granite worktops too.
The kitchen is in great condition but we would like a change. Buying a completely new kitchen is a waste of money especially considering the worktops.
So given that we are considering refurbishment keeping the existing worktop and carcasses but doing something new with the doors and drawer-fronts. We are looking advice on whether it is best to totally replace the doors and carcass edging or get the doors and edging painted.
Either way are there craftsman/kitchen refurbishers who we can get to do this sort of thing. Also how hardwearing is a painted finish. I've been looking at loads of magazines and painted/lacquered kitchens seem to be the norm at the moment.
