I know people who have been given a 20% pay rise to stay in a job and it's made them happy for about a month then it's back to normal.

totally agree with this.....its happened to me.

OP -if you do stay realise you can only play this card once.

If you've gone for other jobs then in the back of your mind at least you had already made the decision that you wanted to leave. You have now made this public with your current employer. I always think that if you have made the decision to leave then you should stick with that.

If you stayed your current employer would always doubt your loyalty because of your threat to leave and if they did somehow match your new offer as sure as eggs is eggs, they will not give you another pay rise for some time to come, as they will feel that they are in effect already overpaying you (whether that is true or not).

My advice would be to move on.

At one place I worked there was a poem on the wall in the Sales Office as they were the people who thought they were indispensable.
    It makes sobering reading

Did you tell your current employer?

I have known people be offered a pay rise not to leave an existing employer, but that is very very very very rare indeed. As others have said, OP played that card and lost. The only thing to do now is leave and take the new job.

What that I'd been offered a job on both occasions?

Yes I did - in fact first they heard of it on both occasions was when I went into resign.

First time I cited the salary (which was the truth). got offered a higher salary to stay

Second time they knew that there was no point in offering an increase as the issues weren't monetary......and if I'm honest these issues were there beforehand, they were just being masked by the monetary ones.

I have not handed in my notice so I have not lost yet. There is much more to moving jobs than salary. The reason for the question was to get other peoples' opinion on what extent salary is important. For example, to me: management style, organizational culture and training are all important. Salary is much less important.

As I am inexperienced moving jobs I wanted to see what experiences other people have had. If I have approached it in a less than perfect way then I will learn from it.

So, what was your main driver for applying for another job?

You can ask people for their opinions BUT they are not you. Everyone is different and what is important to one is less important to another.

    What makes YOU feel valued?

To me money is only important if you don't have enough if it to do what you want in life. If your current package is sufficient to pay the bills, have the quality of living you desire then I wouldn't leave just to have a bit more, even if that meant you were underpaid against the market rate / what you could get. The other things you mention are more important once you meet your desired standard of living.
I'm proud of my advice, if others want to look I say enjoy the show!

The importance of salary depends on what your earning. If your struggling each month and are often left with nothing, or have large debts then salary is likely to be the most important factor for you. If your living the life you want, have everything you want and still have enough at the end of the month to save then it's likely that salary won't be that important to you.
