Electoral roll information not being update until December!

Hi All,

I am planning to apply for a professional development loan and understand how important it is to be on the electoral roll. The problem I am having is that earlier this month I moved home. I immediately applied thought aboutmyvote to be on the electoral roll for my new area. I contacted the local electoral office to confirm everything is ok and they said they have received my application but as I had applied mid-August I have missed the update for September 2014. Instead I will go on the register in December 2014, which is their next update. This is concerning me as I plan to apply for this loan in the next few weeks. At present I am on the electoral roll but for my previous address, and I have now updated all accounts to my new address.

I was wondering if there is anything I can do in this situation? Is this going to mess up my loan application? Any help would be appreciated.

  • No. The lender will be able to see your address history from your credit files.

I understand that they will be able to pull up my address history, but then why is being on the electoral roll considered important for credit applications?

Address is part, but by no means all of a credit scoring system.

Being comfortable that you live where you say you live is the key. If you forget to pay they want to be able to remind you, send the legal notices etc in the confidence that it will have the desired effect.

Voters roll is the high point of address verification. You're committed enough to the location. Let's say you get 10 points for that (my made up number, but it's about the weighting given).

Credit agreements at the address, but not on the voters roll? There's an element of positive there, but also an element of doubt. Does the applicant really live there? Maybe, look, he pays on time. 5 points.

Not on VR and no credit agreements at the address? 0 points.

It's pretty pointless worrying about what you can't influence. What you can influence is registering on the voters roll. What you can influence is changing address with existing credit arrangements. What you can influence is paying credit agreements on time.

It's additional confirmation you live at the address you have provided, you may get accepted but you may also get rejected as it's missing. Even in September it'll take weeks before it's on your credit file so you'll have to chase the CRA's with the confirmation from your council.

If your other accounts have updated the linked address (e.g. bank account), and you have only lived there for a short while then they will understand why you might not be on the electoral roll at that point in time.

Presumably, as it's a recent move into the new address, they'll check you were on the Roll for your previous address - you were weren't you?
