    Hi M_B,

Are you trying to rub it in that you are in Florida, and we are here in rainy thundery UK?!!

Have had a quick look on the Apple website, and the model you describe retails at £949, so an excellent saving there.

No idea which to recommend I'm afraid, maybe post of the Techie Forum? The ex has got a 17 inch MacBook Pro, but that is mega expensive at £1800, and he does use it for work as well as pleasure.

Also am not sure about compatability issues?

Let us know if you go for one! x

According to an ex-colleague of mine, the US layout MacBooks are supposed to have a nicer keyboard layout as they've got one less key and a bigger enter key as a result.

I've never played with the regular MacBooks so I can't say how good they are but I'm quite impressed with the MacBook Pros that a friend of mine has.

@master_blaster - I'm not so sure if it's that much of a bargain if you add import duty & VAT on top of the price. If it's around GBP800, the VAT alone will bring it up to 940 and if it retails at 949 here I can't quite see where the savings is supposed to be?

I'm a Mac user (iMac) and will buy a MacBook soon I'd say go with the base model - I don't intend ever to burn DVDs in a laptop so the base model with as much RAM as you can afford is best. Crucial is cheaper for RAM than Apple so get the base config and buy a larger HDD and RAM separately. Upgrading RAM and HDD is a doddle on a MacBook.

BTW no import Duty on PCs etc (unless recently changed) but VAT will be payable.

Not strictly ethical (or legal!), but if you post all the paperwork back to yourself, and pretend you had the laptop before the trip, you should be able to avoid import duty and VAT.
